Windows and doors lose and gain heat/cold and noise through the frame, glass and air gaps. In windows, the U-value measures how well heat is transferred by the total window, that which is the glass and frame together. The lower the U-value, the better the window is insulated and therefore the better the window will be in retaining the interior’s heat in the winter and keeping heat out during summer.

A significant part of the thermal energy transmission can be through the frames, or profiles, depending on how well the profile material conducts heat. Metals are generally good conductors and will transfer heat and noise more than a timber or UPVC frame. It is also important to get a good seal around the windows to stop air leakage.
